“. . . at Aviary Design Shop you will find a bit of everything. Some of my odd-jobs, examples of my class projects, and a little bit of fine art”
“Those who can’t do, teach”. A phrase clearly written by someone who has never taught high school children. I, like many 20-somethings my age (my husband included), graduated from Art School right as the economy took a nose-dive. Design firms and advertising agencies faced layoffs and budget cuts to stay afloat, leaving little room for hiring this new crowd, freshly released into the workforce. After doing odd-job design work, and a stint working for my mother at her real-estate company, I landed a teaching job at my former high school. Typically artists go into teaching at the end of their career. Well, you can’t plan for everything.
Teaching has completely changed my view on art. I started this company to advertise my design services. But what I later realized was that I needed to not focus so much on doing work for others but to do the work I love, for myself. Here at Aviary Design Shop you will find a bit of everything. Some of my odd-jobs, examples of my class projects, and a little bit of fine art, (when I find time to do it!)
I speak to a lot of business people and often I hear, “I don’t want to hire a design firm, I just want one person to do some design work here and there.” Although my time is divided with my teaching job, I am available for commissions and design work. See the Pricing page for a quick price guide for standard jobs such as business cards and promotional materials. For more consuming jobs, shoot me an email at rachel@aviarydesignshop.com and we will discuss what will be involved in taking care of your project. And visit back often for news on what is going on around my tiny office space.
